What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is just one form of therapy used within the coherent system of healing known as Oriental Medicine. Oriental Medicine includes herbology, physical therapy, dietetics and special exercises (such as Tai Chi and Qi Gong), and is a complete medical system unto itself and is not another branch of modern Western medicine. Acupuncture evolved from principles and philosophies unique to Oriental thinking and Oriental Medicine, and is most effectively applied when done in accordance with those principles.

Western explanation of how acupuncture works?

The 1997 NIH Consensus Statement on Acupuncture states considerable evidence exists that acupuncture:
• Releases endorphins, the bodies natural pain medicine
• Activates the hypothalamus and pituitary gland resulting in a broad spectrum of systemic effects
• Alters the secretion of neurotransmitters and neurohormones, affecting mood and regulatory functions
• Changes the regulation of blood flow, both centrally and peripherally
• Alters immune function
From a western science perspective, these wide ranging effects explain how TCM can treat such varied complaints.

What problems are commonly treated with Acupuncture?

The most common ailments presented to an acupuncturist tend to be pain related conditions. For example; arthritis, back, neck, knee and shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and sciatica.
Traditional Chinese Medicine is a complete medical system that is capable of diagnosing and successfully treating a wide range of conditions including:
